Supporting the North West Construction Industry with
The North West province is one of South Africa’s least-known but resource-rich regions.
In towns like Mogwase, Rustenburg, Koster and Northam, municipalities are expanding infrastructure not just to improve service delivery, but to support and reflect the upgrades happening within the mining sector itself. Roads are being resurfaced. Schools are being renovated. New power generation capacity is being created.
The infrastructure of the North West is often immense in scale and in vision.
Much of this work is made possible by public-private partnerships and social development commitments — but its success depends on on-the-ground delivery.
From our laboratories in Mahikeng and Tshwane, Roadlab supports the testing and compliance needs of municipal contractors, mining operators, school infrastructure developers, and civil engineers building throughout the North West Province.
By servicing new housing developments in Koster, school upgrades in Kroondal and infrastructure linked to platinum mining near Rustenburg and Northam, our teams deliver dependable materials testing across one of South Africa’s most strategically important regions.
The 2025 N4 Buffelspoort Dueling Project
East of Rustenburg, Roadlab is delivering full quality acceptance testing for the N4 Buffelspoort Dueling Project — a four-year upgrade to one of South Africa’s most vital national routes.
The project, which runs from the Buffelspoort Ramp Plaza to the Dr Moroka Ramp, involves the construction of two new eastbound lanes to improve traffic flow and increase capacity along this strategic corridor.
Roadlab’s role covers a wide scope of critical testing services. These include nuclear density testing on fill layers and plate load testing on rockfill layers, essential for ensuring stability and long-term performance.
In addition to field testing, Roadlab performs soil classification, soil stabilisation assessments, and field density testing across multiple platform layers. Concrete cube and durability testing is ongoing for structural elements such as bridges and culverts, while asphalt testing ensures that surface layers meet compaction and quality specifications.
Now eight months into the project, Roadlab is also supporting the extension of the Kruger Bridge, the construction of a new pedestrian bridge, and the installation of multiple box and pipe culverts to accommodate the expanded highway footprint. With this project, Roadlab continues to ensure the integrity of civil infrastructure that underpins national mobility and economic activity.
Expanding North West Municipal Infrastructure
A 20 km road between Mogwase and Sun City is set to begin construction.
This Moses Kotane Local Municipality road is expected to improve access to key tourism hubs in the province and improve commuter movement for mine workers.
In Koster, Roadlab has also been contracted to support the development of a water treatment plant and new residential housing.
In Rustenburg, our teams are currently testing density and compaction layers at Kroondal Primary School as well as quality assurance for base preparation and concrete strength, ensuring that new classrooms and upgrades meet long-term structural standards.
At North-West University’s (NWU) Mafikeng campus, Roadlab conducted nuclear density tests for the institution’s new ring road, ensuring consistent compaction across all paved sections.
We also provided foundation concrete core testing at Gelukspan Hospital, contributing to quality assurance on a critical health infrastructure build.
In Mafikeng, Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing was carried out at Bophelong Hospital to assess foundation strength. Further south in Zeerust, asphalt coring was performed to verify layer thickness and compaction quality as part of a roadworks compliance programme.
Mining in the North West
The major platinum and base metal producers operating in the North West are rebuilding how their operations interface with local communities, governments, and the environment.
Sibanye-Stillwater, one of the largest mining companies in the region, has committed over R80 million toward community infrastructure and development initiatives in the Rustenburg area. These include housing upgrades, public facilities, and roads near its mine shafts.
Roadlab is actively engaging with Sibanye’s teams on the ground — providing layerworks verification, field density, and moisture content testing for roads, and offering support on multiple mine-linked projects.
Further north, between Rustenburg and Northam, Roadlab is supporting Northam Platinum in the development of a new 80 MW solar power plant. This project forms part of the company’s broader decarbonisation strategy and is expected to reduce the carbon footprint of its Zondereinde operation by over 20%.
Our role in this initiative includes Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing to assess foundation suitability, California Bearing Ratio (CBR) and compaction testing to ensure optimal soil performance under load, and concrete cube testing. Together, these services help ensure the plant’s infrastructure is safe, durable, and built to perform over the long term.
Commitment to Quality: A SANAS-Accredited Facility
The North West is not alone in its push for infrastructure-led growth — but it stands out for how tightly its municipal and mining developments are intertwined. I
n Rustenburg and Mogwase, the road to a clinic might pass directly by a mine’s new solar site. In Northam, the housing boom may be funded in part by PGM exports.
This level of integration demands more from testing providers. Roads must last. Materials must meet specification. Coordination between mines and municipalities must not break down under strain.
